Shukurani (thanks) centre

by kisedet | on 05:47 PM | in projects

Kisedet manages a children care centre in Dodoma (the political and administrative capital city of Tanzania), taking care of 35 children between 1 and 18 years of age and proving them with food, clothing, medical care and education—in short we care for all the basic needs of these children. All of them attend primary or secondary schools, some a nursery school and others a vocational school. Once the children finish school we try to help them find a job and make their lives on their own. We hope some of them may stand out in a way and even work for the children care centre itself! There’s a 8-month-old baby girl called Zawadi now and she came here when she was one week old—her mother died the day after her childbirth.

Last year 3 children finish school and now they’re attending the first year of higher education.

Daniel Petro (a boy grown at the children care centre) is attending the first year of college at the hospital of Mwumi, about 30km away from Dodoma, to become a laboratory technician. Dani has been at the Shukurani children care centre since he was 8 years old and he’s been the first to finish higher education and attend a college.

In 2009 5 children finished primary 7th grade school (Zawadi, Saddam, Freddie, Peter e Godfrey). Zawadi e Freddie are attending the second year of a secondary school, Peter e Gody are attending a vocational school whereas Saddam left school and went back to his grandma’s.

Three girls and one boy (Esther, Mariamu, Hawa e Willie) are attending the third year of a secondary school, Lista finished higher education but as he failed his exams now he’s attending a vocational school to become a mechanic.

The twins Venance and Patrick, as well as Ima and Munde, are attending a carpentry vocational course at Veyula (a village just outside Dodoma) and in the afternoon they’re going on with their higher education courses.

We have welcomed 9 street children ( now no more as such) and now they are attending schools regularly and have forgotten about the street—this is a great joy and satisfaction to us all.

The music group of Shukurani has just recorded a CD with 6 songs and as soon as we have a fairly big number of issues we’ll start distributing and selling them. Furthermore this group walks around town once a month and performs a show to attract people and make them aware of the problem of street children.
