8×1000 of the Waldesian Church: updates on the project

This project involves the construction of two main structures for poultry farming and the improvement of the automated irrigation system in the Chigongwe Family long-term center for street children.

We are very pleased to inform you that the construction of the chicken coop is almost completed and will soon be able to accommodate chickens and hens for the production of meat and eggs.
The structure of the chicken coop was built with concrete blocks, aluminium sheet and wooden roof, with adequate ventilation and natural lighting, and there are fenced external areas.
The structure is built based on an estimated guess on the number of chickens expected to be raised (500 chickens overall, 400 of which will be broilers and 100 laying hens).
The external area will allow the chickens to walk outside and will provide a natural integration of vitamins, antioxidants and other important elements for the healthy growth of the birds and make the quality of the meat superior.

Thanks to the completion of the chicken coop, the work to upgrade the water system has begun!

The project includes:

  • the construction of a 20 thousand liter concrete block tank
  • the purchase of an electric pump (with 5 HP power) for pumping on the surface
  • the purchase of 2000 meters of pipes for the drip system including other equipment for automatic irrigation (more efficient than manual irrigation)
  • additional 2 tanks in order to reach a total capacity of 20 thousand litres.

The land of the Chigongwe Family center has an area of approximately 40 hectares of which approximately 40% is for agricultural use and currently irrigation is done manually, a task that requires a lot of time and energy as well as an excessive use of water.
These projects will therefore lead to a notable advantage in terms of partial economic autonomy of the Kisedet center in Chigongwe, the supply of fresh and healthy food to the adjacent villages, and will offer older street children an opportunity for training and work in the agricultural sector.

We will keep you updated on the progress of the work!
